It warms the soil, not the room

A seedling heat mat is a thin waterproof pad that sits under a seed tray and raises the temperature of the potting mix by roughly ten to twenty degrees above the room around it.

That distinction is the whole point. Seeds respond to the temperature of the medium they are sitting in, not to the air. A seed tray on a windowsill in a room held at 68°F often has mix several degrees colder than that, because the surface is losing heat by evaporation and the sill is cold from the glass.

So the mat is not a luxury version of a warm room. It is the only practical way to hold the mix in the range that actually triggers germination.

The temperatures that matter

Most seeds germinate when soil temperature is between 68 and 86°F, and most do best when the medium is consistently 70 to 75°F. For seed started on a mat, extension guidance is to hold the flat at 75 to 85°F until seedlings emerge.

What matters as much is the second number, which almost nobody is told. Once germination has happened, the optimum growing temperature for the seedling is about 10°F cooler than the optimum germination temperature, and after emergence a soil temperature of about 70°F is ideal.

Warm to germinate, cooler to grow. Those are two different jobs and the mat only does the first one.

What it actually buys you

Seeds started indoors germinate sooner and produce healthier roots when the potting mix is warm. The mat compresses the germination window, so a tray comes up in days rather than weeks and comes up evenly, which matters more than speed, because a tray that germinates over three weeks is impossible to manage as one tray.

The less obvious benefit is that bottom heat can help prevent damping off, the collapse of tiny seedlings from pathogens at the surface of the mix. Faster germination means less time spent at the vulnerable stage in damp compost.

Using one properly

    Without a thermostat you are guessing. Mats without one typically run at a fixed offset above room temperature, which is fine in a cool room and too hot in a warm one.

    Heating mats dry the mix out faster, and this is the failure that catches people. A tray that would have stayed damp for four days now needs checking daily.

    Once germination occurs, take the mat away. Seedlings grow better with fluctuating day and night temperatures, and continued bottom heat produces soft, stretched growth.

  5. Then get the light right

    The mat has done its job. What a seedling needs next is strong light, and heat without light is exactly the recipe for a leggy plant.

The general figure of 75 to 85°F until emergence is a starting point. Individual seeds differ enough that the table below is worth checking before setting a thermostat, and one column in it is the reason a tray sometimes fails with everything apparently correct.

The light column is the one that catches people. Petunia, ageratum, snapdragon and wax begonia need light to germinate, so sowing them at the depth the packet suggests for everything else buries them and nothing comes up. A mat cannot rescue a seed that is in the dark when it needs light. Surface-sow those, press them into contact with the mix rather than covering them, and keep the surface from drying, which is harder on a heated tray than on an unheated one.

The second thing the table shows is how narrow the useful range is. Almost every entry sits between 65 and 75°F, which is why the general advice on this page is a range rather than a number, and why overshooting is a real risk. Tomato seed germinates in 6 to 8 days between 65 and 85°F, takes over 40 days at 50°F, and does not germinate at all at 104°F. Peppers come up in 8 days at 86°F and take more than 13 at 58°F. Heat helps until it does not, and there is no benefit past the top of the range.

The cool-season exception is worth naming here rather than only below. Lettuce germinates best at 60 to 80°F and will not germinate at all above 95°F. Lettuce, onion, parsnip and spinach will germinate at temperatures as low as 35°F. A mat set for tomatoes is actively counterproductive under a tray of lettuce.

Once the tray is up, Iowa State gives the growing-on figure plainly: nearly all seedlings do best with daytime temperatures between 65 and 70°F, which is a cooler room than most people keep. That is the same point the section above makes about turning the mat off, expressed as a number.

Do you need one

Not for everything, and this is worth being honest about before spending money.

Cool-season crops germinate happily at ordinary room temperature: lettuce, brassicas, peas, spinach, and most hardy annual flowers. Some of them actively dislike warmth, and lettuce in particular germinates worse when it is too warm.

The plants where a mat makes a real difference are the warm-season ones, which is where the whole practice comes from: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil, and the cucurbits. Peppers especially, which germinate slowly and unevenly at room temperature and quickly at 80°F.

If you start half a dozen trays of tomatoes and peppers each spring, a mat pays for itself in reduced failures. If you start lettuce and cosmos on a windowsill, it is equipment you do not need.

The alternatives, and their limits

The top of a refrigerator is the traditional answer and it is worse than it used to be, because modern appliances give off much less heat. It is unregulated in any case.

A warm spot in an airing cupboard works for germination and fails immediately afterwards, because seedlings emerging in the dark stretch within a day and never recover. If you use one, the tray has to come into full light the moment the first seedling shows, which means checking it twice daily.

Simply choosing the warmest room in the house is the honest low-cost option, and it is what most people did before mats were cheap. It works for everything except the genuinely heat-demanding seed.
