Find your pattern

Pick up an affected leaf and hold it against the light. The patterns below point at completely different causes, and telling them apart is most of the diagnosis.

Small dark flies drifting up when you water Adults, about an eighth of an inch, weak fliers. They settle on the soil rather than zipping around the room.

The causes, in the order they actually occur

Ranked by how often each one turns out to be the answer, rather than by how interesting it is. Open a cause for the fix.

1 The top of the mix never dries almost always

Eggs and young larvae live in the top inch or two. Let that layer dry between waterings and the population collapses in a generation.

2 The pot does not drain common

No drainage hole, or a decorative outer pot holding water. The most common hidden cause.

3 Too much fertilizer often overlooked

Excess feed encourages the fungal and algal growth the larvae eat. Wisconsin lists reduced fertilization among the controls.

4 They came in with the bag or the plant at the start

Most infestations arrive in potting mix or on a newly bought plant, then stay because conditions suit them.

What not to do first

Reflexes that make the problem worse, all of them common and all of them understandable.

Do not spray the adultsThe flies you see are the end of the cycle. The next batch is already in the mix, so killing adults changes the room for an afternoon.
Do not treat the leavesThe problem is below the surface of the pot. A foliar spray is treating the wrong half of the plant.
Do not reach for a soil insecticide firstBti is the targeted option and kills nothing else in the room. Chemical drenches are rarely proportionate for a few houseplants.

They are almost certainly not eating your plant

The small dark flies drifting up when you water a houseplant look like they are attacking it. They are not. Wisconsin Extension is specific about what the larvae feed on: decaying organic matter and fungi in the growing medium.

That single fact reframes the whole problem. Fungus gnats are not a pest of the plant, they are a symptom of the pot. They arrive because the mix is staying wet long enough for fungi to grow in it, and they will keep arriving for exactly as long as that is true, whatever you spray.

The exception is worth stating so the reassurance is honest. At high populations the larvae can feed on root hairs or tunnel into roots, and Wisconsin names seedlings and cuttings as the real casualties, along with begonia, carnation, geranium and poinsettia. Those wounds also open the door to root rot organisms. A plant with an established root system and a few gnats is fine; a tray of seedlings with a heavy infestation is not.

Making sure that is what you have

The adult is a delicate dark brown or black fly about an eighth of an inch long, and a weak flier. That last detail is the useful one: fungus gnats drift and settle, often on the soil surface itself. A fly that zips around the room and lands on fruit is a fruit fly, and the answer to that one is in your kitchen, not your pots.

The larvae are slender maggots up to a quarter of an inch, whitish or see-through, with a distinct black head. You will not usually spot them by looking at the surface.

Wisconsin’s confirmation method is worth doing before you treat anything: lay slices of raw potato on the mix and check underneath after three or four days. The larvae move into the potato and are then unmistakable. It also tells you whether the population is one or two or a genuine infestation, which decides how much effort the problem deserves.

The four things people mistake for them

Two of those distinctions save real effort. Shore flies are the common misdiagnosis, because they turn up in the same conditions, and the reason it matters is that Bti does nothing to them: their larvae eat algae rather than fungi and organic matter. If a soil drench has had no effect at all, look at the wings before repeating it.

And the surest field test costs nothing: water the pot and watch. Fungus gnats and springtails move when the water reaches them, which is why people notice them at watering time and not otherwise. A fly that was already circling the room before you touched the pot came from somewhere else.

Why watering is the whole answer

The life cycle is short. Larvae pass through four stages over one to two weeks, pupate for about a week, and emerge as adults. That is roughly three weeks from egg to fly.

A short cycle cuts both ways. It is why a small problem becomes a cloud in a month, and it is why correcting the watering clears them almost as quickly. The top inch or two of mix is where the eggs and young larvae live. Let that layer dry properly between waterings and the eggs fail, the young larvae die, and the population collapses within a generation or two without you doing anything else.

This is also why the gnats show up in winter far more than summer. The plant is barely growing, needs much less water, and gets watered on the same schedule as in July.

What to do, in order

  1. Water less often, not less at a time

    Soak thoroughly, then wait until the top couple of inches are genuinely dry. Frequent light watering keeps the surface permanently damp, which is the one condition the larvae need.

  2. Check the pot actually drains

    A pot with no hole, or a decorative outer pot holding water, keeps the mix wet no matter how disciplined you are. This is the most common hidden cause.

  3. Ease off the fertilizer

    Wisconsin lists reduced fertilization among the controls, because excess feed encourages the fungal and algal growth the larvae eat.

  4. Put out yellow sticky cards

    They catch adults and, more usefully, tell you whether the population is rising or falling. Judging that by eye is unreliable.

  5. Throw out badly infested mix

    Eliminating infested media and debris is a listed control. A cheap bag of fresh mix is faster than treating a pot that is mostly fungus.

  6. If it persists, use Bti

    Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis is the targeted biological option, applied as a soil drench. It kills the larvae and nothing else in the room.

Seedlings, cuttings and the conflict in the advice

The main instruction on this page is to let the top of the mix dry between waterings. On a seed tray that instruction is unusable, and this is where most people get stuck, because seedlings and cuttings are exactly the plants fungus gnats genuinely damage rather than merely accompany.

A germinating seed and an unrooted cutting need the surface to stay damp continuously. There is no version of drying it out that they survive. So on trays the approach has to change.

  • Bti becomes the first move rather than the last. On established houseplants it is the fallback after watering is corrected; on a seed tray, where the watering cannot be corrected, it is the tool that fits the situation. It is applied as a drench, kills the larvae, and leaves everything else alone.
  • Water from below. Bottom watering keeps the root zone moist while leaving the surface layer drier, which is the layer the eggs and young larvae occupy. It is the only way to get part of the drying benefit on a tray that has to stay wet.
  • Start with fresh mix, and keep the bag closed. Infested media is a listed control precisely because most tray infestations arrive in the mix rather than through the window. An open bag left damp in a shed is a breeding site.
  • Cover the surface once seedlings are up. A shallow layer of coarse grit or fine vermiculite on the surface dries fast and makes the mix harder to lay eggs in, without changing the moisture below.
  • Sticky cards over the tray, not beside it. On a tray the population changes within days, and a card is the only way to see whether it is going up or down before the seedlings show it.

The heat mat interaction is worth naming because it goes both ways. A heated tray dries faster, which works against the gnats, and it also warms the mix into the range where their three-week cycle runs at its fastest. The mat is not the cause, but it does shorten the time you have to act.

Bti in practice, and the traps

Bti appears twice above as the targeted option. It is worth saying what it actually is on a shelf, because the product names are not obvious from the abbreviation and the dosing decides whether it works.

Mosquito Bits and mosquito dunks

The Bti sold for mosquitoes is the same organism sold for fungus gnats, and it is far easier to find. Mosquito Bits are the granular form and mosquito dunks the compressed disc; Gnatrol is the version labeled for gnats directly.

  • As a drench. Steep the granules or a piece of a dunk in water, strain, and water the plant with it. The point is to carry the Bti into the top inch of mix, which is where the larvae are, using enough water to get it there and not so much that it leaches straight past them.
  • Repeat every five to seven days. This is the part people skip and the reason a single treatment appears to fail. Bti does not reproduce or persist in potting mix, so each application only kills the larvae present at the time.
  • It does nothing to eggs, pupae or adult flies. Every one of those becomes a larva or has already passed that stage, which is exactly why the interval matters: you are catching each new batch as it hatches.
  • Safe for plants and pets, and specific to the larvae of gnats and mosquitoes. That is the argument for it over anything broader.

Expect three to four applications over a few weeks to clear an established population, in parallel with correcting the watering. Neither alone is as fast as both.

Traps, and what each one is for

Two different jobs get confused here, and only one of them is control.

  • Yellow sticky traps catch adults and, more importantly, measure. Placed just above the mix, they tell you whether the population is rising or falling, which is impossible to judge by eye because gnats are only conspicuous when disturbed. Treat the count on the card as the result, not the flies you see at watering time.
  • Potato slices are a monitoring tool for larvae, not a trap. Lay slices on the surface and lift them after three or four days: larvae move into the potato and become visible. This is how you find out whether there is a real infestation or two gnats.
  • Cider vinegar traps catch fruit flies well and fungus gnats poorly, because a fungus gnat is drawn to damp soil rather than to fermenting fruit. A trap that fills up quickly is usually telling you the problem is fruit flies, which is worth knowing.

None of the three reduces the population meaningfully on its own. Sticky traps in particular catch adults that have already laid, so a card covered in gnats is a measurement rather than a solution.

What not to bother with

Spraying the adults is the reflex and it is close to useless. The flies you can see are the end of the cycle, not the middle of it, and the next batch is already in the mix. Killing adults changes the number in the air for an afternoon.

The same goes for anything applied to the leaves. The problem is below the surface of the pot, so a foliar spray is treating the wrong half of the plant.

Where a chemical soil drench is genuinely wanted, Wisconsin names cyromazine and diflubenzuron, applied per label. In a home with a few houseplants this is almost never the proportionate answer, and the label on the container you own is the authority on whether it may be used indoors at all.
